How 20+ years of software delivery leadership, a passion for teaching, and a love of chess created a new way to learn the game.
The Spark of ZenAIya™
Chess is a beautiful game—strategic, cerebral, and deeply rewarding. But for those trying to improve and cross the threshold from beginner to intermediate, the journey can feel overwhelmingly chaotic.
When our founder set out to improve his own play, he was immediately struck by the sheer volume of chess learning materials currently available. Between thousands of hours of disjointed tutorial videos, millions of tactical puzzle exercises, and thick theoretical books, there was no cohesive structure. Instead of clear guidance, there was noise. Chess engines offered cold, mathematical evaluations like +1.4 or -0.8, without ever explaining why a move was incorrect in human terms.
Out of this frustration, ZenAIya™ Chess was born. By combining generative AI technology with custom chess engine feedback, ZenAIya™ acts as an interactive coach that explains your blunders and highlights your brilliant tactical patterns in simple, supportive language.
Meet the Founder
Shamik Desai is a seasoned software engineering and technology delivery leader with over 21 years of experience in building and deploying high-impact digital applications. A graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.S. in Application Development, Shamik has spent his career bridging the gap between complex software architecture and operational business strategies.
Throughout his career leading teams in both the public and private sectors, Shamik has led large-scale technology transformations. He has directed programs with budgets up to $450 million and coordinated delivery teams of over 200 software developers, QA engineers, and architects. His early work on globalizing a major hotel chain's website gave him the confidence to tackle ZenAIya™ Chess in multiple languages, aiming to reach a wider global audience and help players worldwide grow their chess games. His technical expertise spans enterprise application design, cloud infrastructure development, and AI integrations.
But beyond architecture and lines of code, Shamik’s true passion has always been teaching. In every leadership role, he has served as a mentor and coach—translating complex technical concepts for junior developers and cross-functional teams, and helping people build the skills they need to excel. ZenAIya™ Chess is the intersection of all his passions: the strategic depth of chess, the cutting-edge capability of conversational AI development, and the joy of teaching others.
